What is your Blood Pressure?
What is Blood pressure?
*The heart is responsible for pumping blood to the tissues and organs of the body. When the heartbeats, it pumps blood to the tube-shaped blood vessels (veins, arteries, and capillaries) of your circulatory system. To pump blood to the body, the heart uses a measure of force/pressure to push the blood against blood vessels' walls. This pressure is called blood pressure.
*With each heartbeat, blood is supplied to the tissues and organs of the body with the help of arteries. Veins are responsible for returning the blood back to the heart. This happens when the veins are squeezed by pressure. At the start, when the blood enters the aorta, the blood pressure is highest. When the blood reaches smaller branches of arteries, the blood pressure is lowest. The difference in blood pressure is the main thing that keeps the blood flow in the body.
*Pumping the blood to all parts of the body is the primary function of blood pressure. Without the blood pressure, the nutrients and oxygen, essential for nourishing the organs and tissues, will not be supplied to the body.
*Blood pressure also transports hormones, antibodies, and white blood cells (immune cells) to parts of the body in need. As long as the heart keeps creating the pressure, the blood continues to flow through the circulatory system.
*The standard unit for measuring the blood pressure is mmHg (millimetres of mercury). A sphygmomanometer is a device that is used to measure the blood pressure in manual readings. It contains a stethoscope, manometer, and a cuff.
*With advances in technology, digital blood pressure monitors are used for automated readings. The digital monitors measure the blood pressure when the volume of blood in the arteries changes. If you have certain heart diseases, such as arteriosclerosis or abnormal heart rhythm, the digital blood pressure monitors can give inaccurate readings.
*There are some factors that cause blood pressure to fluctuate. They include stress, temperature changes, such as extreme cold or heat, pain, and physical exertion. These factors cause only the temporary increase in blood pressure, which returns to normal in a short time.
